Totally psyched that self professed “flower punks” the Black Lips will be playing in the region January 2012! What a way to leave SE Asia watching these dudes. The thing is, it sorta clashes with my move to London. The show is on a Saturday and I have a new student orientation for postgrads that Monday. It can (and will) be done though but I think I may have to leave for London from Bangkok instead of Kuala Lumpur. I don’t think I wanna miss this one!

I always look forward to Heineken Green Room events because of the quality & choice in the main acts they feature and the spunky followers that flock to the party. The latest one featuring Australia’s ‘electro-dance’ trio Art Vs’ Science and America’s Gossip were probably the highlights for me cause a)I didn’t have to go to work the next day and b) you can’t go wrong with boys rockin’ porn staches’ and girls gender bendin’ doing and wearing whatever they please. It might sound pretentious to some but the night was anything but that.

When I first heard Gossip was performing in Malaysia (and not the usual Singapore) I was thrilled but being known as a band that have members that fight, stand up for the rights and are part of the LGBT community, I had my worries that the Malaysian equivalent of the Westboro Baptist Church protesters would picket their concert but when the day came it surely made our neighbours down south green with envy to have such fabulosity grace Malaysian soil.

Minus the ghastly hour long traffic to drive 1km in the city and the gobo chips that never came at the Japanese restaurant we went to (as a treat to ourselves for getting stuck in that traffic) in the same building as KL Live – everything was just right. We managed to catch the tail end performance of local act Mini Compo in which I believed they performed this song as their closer  – It reminds me a bit of the Faint but they did their part in getting everyone excited for the first international guests Art Vs’ Science.

Geek chic and 90s hip-hop

When the boys of Art Vs. Science donned the stage they looked more ‘science’ than ‘art’. Despite only having done my ‘homework’ on them a week before, I felt the music spoke for itself. It was fun, catchy, the boys entertained with synchronised dancing and oh yeah – a wicked rendition of Boom Boom Shake Shake the Room. The rapping was so spot on I almost thought they pulled a Milli Vanilli. They closed with their catchiest song ‘Parlez Vous Francais?‘ which left the chorus with the same title ringing in everyone’s ears for the rest of the night until of course the Gossip titillated us with their presence and began their set with the sultry and groovy Vertical Rhythm off their latest release Music for Men.

Standing in the way of control

Once they launched into the second song of the night – everyone went bananas and jumped around singing the lyrics to “Standing in the way of control” while Three36am ‘survived the only way’ that we knew – up front and center to experience the magic that is Gossip. The next hour or so could only be summed up in highlights including front woman Beth Ditto taking her time to say ‘hi’ to everyone in the front; high fiving, shaking hands, touching everyone and in return letting everyone touch her derrière. Being up front had its advantages and I got to grab on to Ditto’s sweaty palms and smack a big wet kiss on her hand. Ditto was not only figuratively but also literally smoking on stage, accepting gifts from fans in the crowd and even jumping into the crowd during Heavy Cross for some heavy petting with fans. While most international acts learn the usual “Terima Kasih” (thank you) when trying to interact and impress their Malaysian fans, Ditto learned a word more meaningful and powerful; “cinta” (love) which she repeatedly said throughout the night. One twitter user summed it up best; “Beth Ditto isn’t a singer, she’s an experience”.

While most of the attention was on Beth Ditto and her endearing stage antics, it’s also hard to ignore the rest of the band. You have the handsomely beautiful and super fly drummer Hannah Blilie whom I couldn’t take my eyes off that night and the presumably male and straight counterparts of the band – Brace Paine on guitars and keyboards and their 4th and touring member who played bass. When Ditto jumped into the crowd, I jumped on stage (twice!) and dance around like an asshole and blew kisses to all the other band members because they deserved it and I wanted them to know that nothing will stand in the way of control of one just wanting to have fun. Thank you Heineken for giving that liquid courage and of course for putting on another kick ass Green Room event.

Aphrodite LIVE tour

Excitement and awe.

I felt like a 12 year old, but more contained.

Nevermind that the fiancé and I scraped ourselves out of a major 360 skid on the highway, driving over to Singapore from KL.

And never mind that making it to the Kylie concert was the only passing thought as we spun around in virtual slow motion.

I was finally here.

The build up and the anticipation was an experience on it’s own, watching all the fabulously over-the-top fans dress up in feathers and wings, and glitter and gold. There was a threesome with identical white winged headgear, to match their “Aphrodite.”

Such was her impact. As the mostly matured concert attendees entered in droves, one thing I noticed was the ratio of expats and foreigners to Singaporean/ Asian attendees. They literally made up half the audience, which is a useless fact, I digress.

I panned the stadium and was impressed with the elaborate pillars of a Greek theatre, with black boulders and a centered, giant golden clam shell. The set resembled the cliffs of a Greek isle. All mocks, but pretty stunning nonetheless.

The DJ taunted the audience with Kylie house-mixes amid cheers and flashing stage lights. Then the moment finally arrived. The lights dimmed through thousands of screams, as the LED backdrop lighted up with Greek god and goddess-like swimmers submerged in a deep glass pool. The robed dancers stealthily and gracefully filled the stage from the corners, and goddess Kylie opened with the title track “Aphrodite.” Clad in a mini robe, gold waist cincher (reminiscent of those WWF belts!), and winged head gear, she owned the stage. Her affectionate cry of “Singapore!” was reciprocated with a multitude of screams that merged into one roar.

The stadium was held captivated in her tiny palm as she pranced and sang live- a challenging task, but trust Kylie to take it in her stride and live up to her image as a pop-music entertainer. She kept a glimmering gold bodysuit on, while changing into her D&G designed outerwear. She opened the show with white robes and gold gladiators (pun intended), with changes including a full black feathered hooped skirt and top hat, a gold tiered head piece teamed with a long flowing ivory robe, a metallic-holographic full skirt teamed with knee high matching boots, and a slinky beaded mini dress with a pearl beaded cap- very 70s-ish. With her energy and passion, one would have never imagined her battle and hardship with cancer to emerge a survivor. She definitely did not let that get her down for long, and if it did, she came back even better than before. Effervescent like a fizzy drink with constant bubbles. One of the memorable songs was a different  rocker take on  ”Can’t get you out of my head,”  backef up by her band and edgy guitar riffs. Another was a jazzy version of “Slow,” complemented by a bevy of feathered show-girl dancers who enveloped the tiny warbler as she stood centrestage. She managed to incorporate an element of her personal life in her elaborate show- a still image of her Spanish model boyfriend, Andre Velencoso, appeared on the main LED backdrop as she held her hand up high, in tribute to him as her “Cupid boy.” During the second half of the show, there was a break-it-down moment . She emerged with new, sleeked-back hair, frayed denim shorts and a bright orange feather boa over her shoulders to the rhythm of “Step back in time.” While in the moment, she also belted out the crowd favorite “Better the devil you know” as well as her “retro” hit “I should be so lucky.”

The sassy singer had it all. She cheekily bantered with the audience and embodied the spirit of a mortal Aphrodite. During a tender moment when she sang, “If you don’t love me,” much to the audience’s disbelief, everyone retorted, “WE LOVE YOU, KYLIE!” She reciprocated with a shy smile to herself, yet shared the emotion with the thousands in front of her. Her stage persona, much like herself in interviews, was honest and just, well, nice! For lack of a better word. Her band, dancers and back-up vocalists all shone without overpowering. They were the perfect accompaniment and their execution: flawless in their flowing gold, Grecian inspired costumes.

A well executed concert, her costume changes and elevated rope (and might I add, very toned) artists made me appreciate the money spent on our tickets that was worth every Singaporean cent! The cohesive theme was well played out with trojan dancers and gold shields, as well as our Aphrodite who even sang from a carriage at one point. Despite not being able to experience the full waterworks with a real pool and synchronized swimmers in the “Aphrodite Les Folies” tour in Europe, the “Aphrodite LIVE” was still an exceptional show nonetheless.

After years of anticipation- I had bought tickets to her “Showgirl” 2004 tour in Singapore, which was subsequently cancelled due to her cancer diagnosis, and a failed attempt to watch her “X” concert in 2008- I finally saw Kylie in the flesh. I remember being a 7 year-old girl growing up in Perth for a few years, knowing who Kylie Minogue was inevitable. Who’d have known she would subconsciously have an effect on me? From her Coca Cola TV ad, to her music videos on “Rage”, I knew I’d get to see her live someday. And I did.

I had a few post ideas on the backburner, like  why I think Bethany of Best Coast is BFF material. And why the Horrors are a group of talented wedding musicians, but as the underlying theme goes, life happens.

We’ll see how it goes though. I haven’t given up! I think it’s time I ‘woke up’ and revive this thing.

For me, it started a week before. Having just gotten my salary and in dire need of a break from the norm, I decided to put any financial strife on the ‘ignorance burner’ and splurge on free standing tickets for a band that is an essential part of building up my “Voltron” of my favourite 90s revival bands. Having already started piecing together the ‘giant super robot’ in the form of some of my favourite like Blur, Atari Teenage Riot & Faith No More in the 2 years, Suede is just as crucial a piece.

In my solo pursuit I decided to join the Suede ‘fanclub’ facebook page in Singapore and to my surprise it wasn’t a shit talking threshold as I’d imagine it to be. I initially posted in hopes to find anyone willing to meet up and do a sign to flash at the concert. That led to more discourse and eventually a planned meet-up a few hours before the show at the Starbucks nearby the indoor stadium.

By the time a few of us got to stadium at 4 p.m. there was already a handful of people ahead of the line. And although there was a steady flow of early birds, nothing close to what I’d imagine it was during their hey day. During the 4 hours till doors opened, the Singapore Indoor Stadium was our ‘playground’ and the once ‘wild ones’ mingled with the ‘new generation’ of fans all in the name of front row standing view!

Suede are rockstars – hands down. True meaning of rockstars – the kind that travels the world to perform almost nightly to their fans in different countries and despite the incomprehensible jetlag and exhaustion they must suffer daily and nightly, they can still deliver with all the powers that be. Most impressive performance would have to go to Brett Anderson. He was every bit of sex on stage as the YouTube (and VHS) videos in the past have portrayed him to be. He still jumps up and down with one leg on the monitor speakers. His hand clap and hip swagger ‘dance’ still make the men and women swoon. He still knows how to work the microphone like a lasso and last but not least….that voice. Ohhh my, that voice.

Nearly 90 minutes with a 2 song encore later, it was over… or was it? I just happened to be among a group of rabid Suede fans who were relentless on intercepting the band at their hotel for a personal meet/greet. After taking photos at the stadium of the aftermath we got side tracked by a group of fans waiting for the band to get into their tour vans. Bassist Mat came out first and chatted a bit with the crowd. Later guitarist Richard came out and was kind enough to take photos with fans and sign autographs. Shortly after the rest of the band came out and just waved and went straight into the van. We knew we had to find a way to get to the hotel and taxi’s at the time were hard to come by. Note, I have never ‘stalked’ a band like this ever before but I thought this could be my only time to actually ‘meet’ the band so why not? Life is too short to wonder “what if?”. So 5 minutes after the band left the venue with no taxi in sight we waited in line at a taxi stand. You could almost smell the tension and aura of purpose permeating the air around us till finally a man approached us and told us he could accommodate the 5 of us in his van. Albeit a bit pricey for a 10 minute drive, we didn’t even stop to think and were in the van ‘chasing the dragon’ (god sorry for all these lame song-related puns)

We arrived at the Ritz Carlton but unfortunately missed the band by a few minutes. Still determined, we hung around in the hotel lobby for a while in hopes they’d come down for a night cap or something. During that time we came up with ridiculous schemes to get them down to the lobby – all in the fun of things ^_^ However when it got close to midnight, sad to say I gave up and caught a cab back to my hotel before the midnight taxi surcharge. The second I step into my hotel room though I get a text:

“I just shook Mat Osman’s hand”

This coming from one of the girls whose sole purpose for living that night was to shake Mat Osman’s hand – and she did just that! As I told the rest of them, me going home early was a sacrifice to the group, so in return, someone from Suede would come down.

Sure seeing the band live and in the flesh and being able to sing and dance to their songs in the moment was a major highlight for me, but in retrospect, it was also the fans I truly enjoyed meeting. The dedicated die hard fans who baked cupcakes for the band, flew thousands of miles to see them, cried uncontrollably – it was just amazing to watch it all right in front of me. To those folks, I’ll ‘see you in the next life’.

SUEDE HIGHLIGHTS

• Since their first album is in my top 5 albums ever, every song played from it was a highlight (I really hoped they had played the Drowners though!)
• Brett Anderson going “He’s just a fucking animal” right in front of me before going off on a foot tapping/dance/clap frenzy.
• The realization that my sign had been spotted shortly having Brett Anderson yelp “she sells heart, she sells MEAT” in my face as I shook the sign right in front of his face.
• Lasso mic move and full body wrap – check!
• Oh yeah, Brett Anderson finally got on twitter and he signed up shortly after the Singapore concert. (EDIT – According to some fans who met him the morning after, ‘he did NOT set up a twitter account and Mat added that it was probably a virtual impostor.’)

The labour day weekend was definitely an action packed one and we had Maroon 5 to thank to kick it all off. Admittedly, we aren’t super fans of the five-some but the urge to NOT turn the radio off whenever a song of theirs comes on is a compliment, grouping them in the 10% that is NOT classified as ‘garbage’ (by our standards). What sets them apart from overly autotuned and sampled “artists” out there is their unyielding musicianship and soul. FYI – if you’ve read our previous post about Justin Bieber, well we’re not exactly big fans of how his ‘team’ market him to be, but we have to admit that little dude has some musical skills too (just youtube his drum solo!) Anyway, this post isn’t about the Biebs but rather Adam, James, Jesse, Michael & Matt – the five that make women swoon and go maroon in the face.

We could give you a song by song breakdown, but honestly we only know 7 songs by them and it just so happened they performed six of those songs! It was also kind of relief there was no opening act. No disrespect to local acts, but 99.9% of the time, people are here to see the headlining acts (esp. in Malaysia where foreign acts are few and far between) and no one is interested in foreplay when it comes to concerts (that – and we seriously recycle the same opening musical acts!) It’s not like M5 needed anyone to warm up the stage because the second the lights went out everyone went into a screaming frenzy.

We do have to grumble a little about Stadium Putra in Bukit Jalil. The acoustics were, well, how do we put it, kind of underwhelming. We stood all the way in the back in the freestanding Zone B area and it seemed half of the stadium was filled with yelps and screams of fans while the other (front) half was the band. It didn’t feel and sound very “stereo” which made the concert feel a bit dissonant. Also, what was up with the projector displays? They were the size of some meeting room screen projecting powerpoint presentations. That aside,  the band delivered and performed in full body and soul. Personally, the thing about going to shows and concerts is not to watch/listen to a band and hope they sound exactly like they do on record. It’s the extra element the musicians put to change it up a little that makes seeing a band ‘live’ all worth it. Maroon 5 did just that.  From their Tina Turner cover of ‘What’s Love Got to do with It’, to their extended She Will Be Loved sing-a-long and in general, the rest of the songs having extra life and pizzazz than they sound on CD. There were people dancing in groups, slow dancing with eachother, unified arm sways across the arena and your occasional bored boyfriend. Surprisingly, we were taken aback and impressed by the killer guitar solos in their set. If you closed your eyes, you’d for a second think you were at a Metallica concert (like really closed your eyes). And when you opened your eyes again, you’d think you were at some ‘handsome boy modelling school’ giving lessons on how to make love to your mic. Yes, Adam Levine is a sexy man and is like a modern day Jim Morrison, but look beyond that and you get a solid pop-rock band with immense stage presence and what it takes to make it harder to breathe (esp. for the ladies) – namsayin!? We regret leaving before their encore though because we missed an apparently ‘epic’ closing with their song Sunday Morning – also the 7^th song of theirs we actually know. C’est la vie!

Exclaimed lead singer, Erlend Øye, who summed up the mood of the night. Fans obediently did as told and danced! De-ja-vu for those fans who had also watched the riveting Kings of Convenience live in KL exactly a year ago, when we were given the same instructions!

Berlin-based electro-band, The Whitest Boy Alive performed an animated and intimate show at Mist Club, Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday, 22 March 2011.

A vastly improved Tendrfist opened the night just before 9pm, setting the electro-base of the evening.

They appeared poised with polished songs and relaxed stage presence. One tune that stood out was their new single, featuring sing-along-chorus “This Wasted Heart.” The boys, Daniel Nentwig (keyboardist and Rhodes extraordinaire) and Erlend were both caught dancing to their beats to the corner of the stage.

They exuded ease while enjoying the opening act themselves.

Despite a long wait and a late 1030-ish start, Erlend led the band to the stage amid cheers and screams, opening with

“Keep a Secret.” Reminiscent of retro-Europop, they too dressed the part- Marcin Oz’s tousled curls and business-at-the-back hair, Sebastian Maschat’s preppy linen jacket, Erlend’s oversized spectacles, and Daniel’s cheeky moustache, all reflected the band’s cohesiveness while maintaining their quirky individual styles.

The electric, synthesized dance tunes from the 3 Berliners and 1 Bergen-er (OK, Norwegian would make more sense ), was edgy and their set was tight. Each musician had his solo moment and their individual strengths proved a perfect musical blend. Sebastian’s beats were precise (albeit played while sitting noticeably straight and upright!), vocals upbeat, and creative synthesized sounds brought the crowd shuffling and fist pumping through the night! The Rhodes intro of “1517″ cut through which definitely got everyone grooving and the dancefloor moving!

The same crowd banter and interaction was evident (as with The Kings of Convenience show), getting us all to join in choruses – “Upside down” was memorable- and assisting with clap-percussion to songs from both 2006′s ”Dreams” and 2009′s “Rules” albums. They also got into the scene, taking their own photos and videos from the stage. Although the air-conditioning wasn’t exactly up to par, with Erlend requesting to turn on the A/C, it didn’t stop them him and the rest from jumping up and down and across the stage to create a lively performance.

Also noteworthy was his quirky dance prowess, with the crowd enjoying every hair flip and air kick. They ended the night with “Burning,” while the guys hilariously poked fun at each other taking turns to sing the chorus.

The encore of the night introduced their newest single, “Show Me Love,” before taking their bows in unison.

Truly, a live dance party for 2011 to remember!

We had Mary J Blige just before the Chinese New Year break, then Deftones came to rock the year of the rabbit. Of course if you’ve missed out any of those, you know we can’t seem to get enough of this Americano music ‘cos they’re invading our shores again this April!
